Ruth S. Laizer
One of the 12 siblings, Ruth was the first one in family and village to earn a university degree- A true inspiration for Maasai girls – as well as women everywhere. She is a living testimony/story of a snatched from a jaw of a child marriage…. She was engaged while her mother was carrying her in the womb.
Most Maasai women remain uneducated and illiterate. They have few alternatives besides spending their life at home, taking care of the children and the livestock – completely dependent on their husband and his income. Equality among men and women remains a distant dream in the Maasai community. But, for Ruth she knew deep inside that the only thing which can help them in the family is education. With the great support from her dear Mother, and a brother (deceased) Ruth was able to go to school, through difficulties and obstacles up to the University level.
